What we call "sparklies" (or "smart dust") are particulates that we are noticing after sunrise on cool days. We think they are in the cooler layer of air that is
near the ground in the early morning and then as the air becomes warmer at sunrise, they become more active. This is also seen during dark night-time
hours, by using a flashlight. They seem to be excited by the
sunlight or flashlight, and they move in a "flocking manner". Our eyes don't notice them, focussing on more solid things in the background, but the camera catches them. They seem to be semi-transparent, flat and thin, they remind us of a shiny type of silicon. Whatever they are, we don't want to be breathing them. |

We had heard of "dry rain" before, full of dessicant chemicals instead of water. Sometimes the mix includes almost no water, and then the rain is noticeably dry. This video shares our experience in Pinetop, Az, in April, 2008. |
